Cultural References to Postum
In the book by David McDowell, "A Death in the Family" (Copyright 1957), Jay and his wife, Laura, bicker about her serving Postum rather than coffee.
In the movie "Bye Bye Birdie" (released in 1963), Mrs. Peterson says, "I don't know why we have to go running around all night looking for someone it would be better not to find in the first place. If you listen to me, sonnyboy, you'll come home, have a nice cup of Postum and go to bed."
In episode 14 of the third season of "Seinfeld" (aired in 1992), "The Pez Dispenser", George Costanza was so nervous that he was going to break up with his girlfriend, he mad a list of things to talk about. When Jerry Seinfeld asked him what was on the list, George responded with "Let's see, how I'm very good at going in reverse in my car, why isn't Postum a more popular drink, …" Jerry stopped him from continuing by saying, "Yeah, Postum is underrated.
In the book by Toni Morrison, "Jazz" (Copyright 1992), she often refers to Postum, which a few of the novel's characters drink regularly when having conversations.
Since Postum was created in 1895, Mr. Burns is depicted as being really, really old in an episode of "The Simpsons" entitled "Homer the Smithers" (season 7, episode 17, aired in 1996). In a scene, Mr. Burns throws his glass at Home and asks, "You call this Postum?" He then bashed a 5-foot pile of paper and asks, "You call this a tax return?" Finally, he bangs a CRAY with his cane and asks, "You call this a supercomputer?"
In episode 17 of the second season of "South Park" (aired in 1998 ), "Gnomes" (sometimes aired as "Underpants Gnomes"), a national coffee chain called Harbucks arrives in South Park. The name of their representative is "Mr. Postum".
In the book by Carrie Jones, "Tips On Having a Gay (ex) Boyfriend" (Copyright 2007), the main character drinks Postum because caffeine gives her seizures.
